Trey Lyles

Post by ahunte1 »

So, this popped up in my "Porter Moser" Google alert this morning: Trey Lyles Recruiting: Here Comes Loyola Chicago!

Trey Lyles is a 6'10" senior-to-be power forward from Indianapolis, and he's ranked 4th nationally by ESPN.

Actually a pretty funny read, and funnier that Mr. Sterling wrote it. Maybe he should recall that his son passed up on scholarships (or maybe just one - I think In. State and Wright State though) to walk on at LUC, so crazy things do happen.

I'm mostly just glad to see us taking ourselves seriously by getting involved with some high-profile recruits. You're right, '08 that crazy things do happen, and it only takes one player like this to make a big leap forward. It won't happen overnight, but you can't win if you don't play the game.

We all know there is next to no chance of landing him. That doesn't mean you don't reach for the stars.

One thing that LU can offer that the big boys can't is the chance to be THE guy. In the past decade, there has been a shift. Players who are THE guy are finding themselves in the first round of the NBA draft. Go to a mid-major (and now we are in the premier mid-major conference) and dominate the opposition.

Then again, kids are kids. They like the big names. Heck, look at Jeffrey Jordan. He passed up on us to ride the pine for U of I. How'd that work for him?

There is not "next to no chance" we would land him....there is no chance. But I love the fact that we are thinking big. We will never get the the 4th ranked kid, if we keep trying....maybe someday we get the 24th ranked kid. Keep it up Porter.

There are some nice comments to that story. It's almost like the readers admonished the writer for being unduly cynical.

One thing they didn't bring up is what happens to a lot of kids at that level-- things don't work out at the first school they try for one reason or another, their star fades a bit, and they're looking to transfer for their second or third year. How many times do you hear from a kid looking to transfer that "they also recruited me out of high school." I hear it all the time.

Look at a kid like Myke Henry at Illinos. If we'd been on him as a high school junior or senior, maybe he'd give us a look now.

And it doesn't hurt for other recruits to see that themselves mentioned along with Trey Lyles. Too, it's a way for Porter to demonstrate to them that he's serious about raising the stakes. I suppose you can take this too far, but there's not much of a downside that I can see.

Wasn't Gardner coaching HS down that way before LU? He may have some connection to him also.

Yes, Gardner was an assistant at Indianapolis Cathedral for a year or two before heading to Loyola.

I think Loyola DID recruit Henry out of high school. I am pretty sure he attended either Midnight Madness or a game.

I wonder if Moser would be interested in Henry as a transfer?
