Jerry Harkness....
Jerry Harkness passed away today.....what a great gentleman , player and representative of Loyola U. Had a chance several times to meet him. He was always more than gracious with his time and seemed to have no ego...guessing that is part of what made him the leader of our 64 team. I can still remember Red Rush saying " you can bet when the time comes the ball is going to go to Harkness" in that Championship game and it did but he passed it up leading to the shot and the winning tip in.
Re: Jerry Harkness....
Oh no. Terrible news. I'm so glad the story of his team lived on through the 2018 team. RIP.

Harkness embodied the story of America itself. He came from nothing. What he did meant everything.

RIP Mr. Harkness.
Re: Jerry Harkness....
That hurts a lot. What a great spokesman he was for everything that team did.
Re: Jerry Harkness....
RIP. The program and community was lucky to have such a committed alumnus.

Re: Jerry Harkness....
An interview we watched with him helped spur some rich and memorable dialogue with our children about equity, perseverance, teamwork and commitment. A wonderful representative for Loyola - he will be missed. RIP.
Merle Webb: Let's win this game for all the small schools that never had a chance to get here.

Re: Jerry Harkness....
Jerry was a great basketball player and team leader. During his junior and Senior year, the Ramblers were never ranked above #10 in the AP poll. He and his teammates reached the semifinals of the NIT tournament in 1962 before beating the University of Cincinnati for the NCAA Championship in 1963. A great athlete but an even greater person. Always approachable and willing to talk about Loyola basketball past and present. A great example of the type of athletes that come to Loyola. My sympathy to his family.

Very nice obituary in today's NY Times.
