We're allowed to vent on a basketball forum about our coach of a couple weeks ago using Loyola slogans and poaching the staff. I'm over him leaving and was alright with it, but seeing that was annoying. Also not upset about Custer or Gordon leaving. Gordon always follows Porter and Custer is just getting started and OU will look great on his resume. I'm excited about the team we have currently and Valentine, but I don't see the issue with venting about Porter acting like a used car salesman.
Porter built a brand and it’s gone with him. Hardly used car salesman territory, or at least not anymore than is required for the job. Let that shit go. Nobody broke any promises to you or Loyola. And FWIW I’m not telling what you are or are not allowed to do on an Internet forum. I am telling you I think it’s irritating.
Loyola is the brand. Not Porter.
Thank you. Isn't it weird that we have to remind people?

Look, it’s pretty common for some assistants to follow a coach when they change jobs. I don’t hold any bad feelings at all about that. Matt Gordon followed Porter to Loyola from SLU...so did we “poach” him? Nah, I would’ve been shocked if he didn’t go to OU with PM. Custer is just starting out in his coaching career, and getting a wide variety of experience isn’t a bad thing in that profession. It’s not necessarily if you leave, but how you leave, and neither of them have done or said anything to make me wish them anything but the best. I hope Custer learns a ton, becomes a great coach, and returns to Rogers Park some day.

The “Created By Culture” stuff is just weird, but it’s the school’s call on whether it’s an issue they want to pursue. I doubt they want to create a scene of bad blood, so I doubt they do anything except maybe a quiet call if they do have a problem with it. They put in years of money, marketing and product production to associate it with the school. To just let that float away is odd, but their call. The closest I’ve ever come to practicing IP law was researching potential product names and advertising slogans, and companies watch that stuff like a hawk...if they care. But I’m pretty clueless about the weeds of that law to really be too pissed. Or, as I told my old boss once: “I know just enough to be dangerous and disbarred.”™️

Agreed--I think the assistant coaching stuff is fine and expected. Maybe Valentine didn't plan on retaining them--who knows? Custer might have a bright coaching future and "Oklahoma" would look great on his resume as he climbs the ranks. There is no doubt in my mind he still holds Loyola #1 in his heart. I moreso throw "assistant coaches" in my complaints because it sounds better to have a list of things to complain about!

I can't think of any excuse for the "Created by Culture" nonsense. It is annoying and very weird.

Back to talking about the Class of '21...

I shouldn't have used the word poaching, I have no bad feelings about any of them leaving as I said in my post. I strictly think the "Created by Culture" phrase being used is annoying that's all. People find my post irritating, I find OU's social media posts irritating.

Oh I think it’s annoying as hell. Especially literally just copying and pasting the font. IMHO it was built and popularized in part by not just Porter, but the overall school atmosphere, Jesuit background, Sister Jean, etc., etc. ...so it is definitely a Loyola thing in my eyes. But if the school doesn’t see it the same way, and wants to let it go, I’m not going to spend much time worrying about it. Gets me nowhere except unnecessarily frustrated. And I‘m just ready to fully move on to Drew’s Crew™️

Then why does he get to take "Created by Culture" with him?

There are obviously two "brands" at play here: Porter's personal brand and the Loyola brand. Created by Culture was associated with Loyola, and it should be ours. Porter can take his personal brand with him wherever he goes, but he shouldn't export the Loyola brand -- and Oklahoma shouldn't want him to do that. He should use his philosophy, experience, and style to build something new at Oklahoma.

That's what I was getting at by saying Loyola is the brand. Loyola is "Created by Culture"--not Porter.

It's a silly discussion, but it really is annoying and rubs me the wrong way.

He can have the slogans and all that. Because at the end of the day he, like so many NBA Stars, are mercenaries without a home to come back to when it's all said and done. Oklahomas guys (Blake Griffin , Trae Young, etc.) Are not Porters guys. Loyolas guys will be celebrated and have flowers thrown at their feet and Porter won't be able to participate in and enjoy that. I think knowing no fan base is "yours" is punishment enough.

I'm amused. We've come a long way since many of us here were throwing up each time Porter mentioned "changing the culture".

I always thought all the "culture" stuff was pretty stupid anyway. If Porter wants it he can have it IMO, I'd rather go a different direction with Loyola's branding. It's too dorky.
