Contracts are an interesting thing these days in Oklahoma. According to a Supreme Court decision just last year, roughly half of Oklahoma is still Native land. I’m not sure if Norman falls within those boundaries, but PM may or may not now be subject to Tribal court jurisdiction for certain disputes in his new neighborhood.JCT wrote:Glad you pointed this out, 25. This program named their sports teams after the people who cheated on the people who were reneging on a treaty that gave land to Native Americans. They are literally named for cheaters who cheated on cheaters who were ripping off people who had already been cheated.25yearstreak wrote:The term Sooner refers to the 1889 land rush when Oklahoma land was open to stake claims. There was a set starting time for the land rush to start but some enterprising people snuck out and pounded stakes in the ground early "staking their claims", a bit early.
Hence the term "Sooners". It was at the time not meant to be a compliment.
I was reminded of this plenty of times this week when they had a "what have YOU got to be upset about" and "just shut up and mind your business, you stupid big city Yankee" attitude on Twitter. Jeez.
Yes, I have a background in Central Oklahoma, too. In 1987, I was hired to host a morning show at KLTE FM in Oklahoma City. The show only lasted about three months before we realized it wasn't working-- I was doing large market Album Rock humor on an Adult Contemporary station in a rural-minded market. I was hired immediately by a Classic Rock station that was located in the suburb of Moore, OK in between Oklahoma City and Norman (I think the studio was wiped out in one of the several Moore tornadoes that flattened the town). But I decided to move back to Chicago.
But anyway, one of the things I did at KLTE was hosting a charity fundraising event with at the time Oklahoma football coach Barry Switzer. All I remember from that event was that Switzer was shockingly tiny and he had no personality whatsoever while not speaking on stage.
And the final thing that makes me angry about it is.... the money they gave to Poter to leave was FOOTBALL MONEY. It used to be that big sports programs were either football schools or basketball schools. Texas and Oklahoma and Florida never gave a damn about men's basketball until the mid-late 1970s. By the mid-80s, they realized they could use their football money to poach the best coaches from the flagship programs of long-time, historical basketball schools.

Speaking of contracts, does anybody know if there was a Buy Out clause in Porter's contract with Loyola, and if so, what the amount was?

Re: Assistant Coaches
As long as we are doing history, while OK was home to its own native Native Americans it eventually became part of the holding tank for Native American tribes moved west, including our own Pottawatomie Tribe(Battle of Ft. Dearborn (Roosevelt rd and Michigan Ave) which has 10,000 tribe members in OK. and they are Benedictans. The development of Northern Illinois is directly correlated to their removal...a series of treaties and conflicts (BLackhawk War) starting roughly in 1830 and continuing off and on for a couple more decades.

Speaking of the Battle of Fort Dearborn. The settlers and natives agreed to have the settlers abandon the fort in exchange for safe passage. About one mile out, the natives reneged and massacred the settlers.
Years later when Chicago was resettled an Indian boundary line was established. The Indians could not come inside the boundary line.
My father told me it was Ridge Avenue.
Speaking of Chicago tidbits, most of the "land" east of Michigan avenue is the remnants of buildings from the Chicago fire. It was used as
landfill.

Re: Assistant Coaches
Porter just added an assistant coach with Texas experience.
1. Does anyone know if the current Oklahoma staff status is?
2. I thought I had heard that Matt Gordon and Clayton Custer were following PM to Oklahoma. Yet there names were
still on the Loyola staff directory.

I saw that on Twitter, streak. The Loyola site hasn't been updated at all.25yearstreak wrote:Porter just added an assistant coach with Texas experience.

Re: Assistant Coaches
Patrick Wallace’s Twitter bio now says “Assistant Coach”, although I’m not positive it didn’t used to when he held the video coordinator position under Porter. Regardless, he has also been retweeting Drew/Loyola things. Gotta imagine he’s staying on

Re: Assistant Coaches
Thanks again Ahunte1.
Looks like a complete purge of the upper echelons. Jim Molinari was on the Okie site last week. Now gone.
PM added a guy named Turner. And of course Dildy was added as well.
Looks like two spots open.
I had heard Gordon and Custer were joining PM
and that Wallace and London were going to stay with Valentine.
I believe Kimbrough was interviewing for a D1 job at one of the Indiana alphabet schools.
ok when is the schedule coming out for next year? i wanted to be the first to ask.
