Osborne, Pickett, Nixon, T. Williams, and the hole in the 13th scholarship being out, put us at 8 scholarship players available to play on the roster. Let’s make that 7, with King only playing 1 minute (although we should count London Dokubo). I hope that this is the last season we will have without filling all 13 scholarships.
I agree the starters are playing too many minutes, especially early in the year when we should be developing new talent. Although we shouldn’t rush injured players back, especially in non-conference play. But we need center play, and we have them, healthy & available.
Put Turk, CJ, & King in for more minutes and give the starters some rest so they will have some energy left for the final stretch at the end of the game.
One thing that I didn’t mention if that we should look for is a defensive shot blocker in the center to make life much easier on our whole defense. Tenn. Tech’s 3 big men made 15 of 19 inside shots and pulled down 21 rebounds in 60 minutes of play. Now is the time to develope a shot blocker. In 4 years, King could rank with the best of them (that is sweet 16, Andre Moore, since the time they started keeping that stat). Make our opponents work a little harder if they want to shot inside.
The loss is not a total disaster. We are a young team that lost a close game to a team with talent, which barely lost on the road to a good South Florida team. We were on the road against the team that gave us a real battle on our home court last year. And they have more of their scorers back.
Again, I hope that the Coach follow through on his plan to give our 2 new 6’10” centers some playing time.
Go Ramblers!
