Just noticed that the Sun Times reports that DePaul University Men's Basketball Coach Dave Leitao is suspended for three games and the program is put on probation for three years for "failure to prevent violations from occurring in the program".

Well DEPEWL has fallen a long way from the CLASS years of RAY MEYERE to the garbage pile of KY LOUISVILLE CINCY et al !! A black mark on Chicago Sports !! SHAME !!

I'm all for piling on DePaul, but in their defense it does seem like they fired the assistant coach in question and self-reported the violation. The punishment (3 years probation) seems pretty harsh, especially when you consider issues at other schools that have been reported.

I wonder if this will have any impact on retaining their current recruiting class which I believe was very strong?

Dont think the punishment is harsh at all...the probation is pretty much meaningless....still allows for dp to participate in tournaments correct? and the fine was $5000 bucks and coach sits out 3 meaningless early season games....but still is in control of practices etc......the NCAA is way too easy on all these violators.

I assumed it meant a postseason ban. What is probation?

Just another reason why I can’t take them seriously as a “Major” school. They can’t even cheat and get away with it like the real major conference schools.

Two items that struck me from the article....

1. Their men's basketball budget is approximately $7.1 million a year. Other Big East schools are about at that level.
Ours is about half that.

2. They were cheating and conspiring to hide the violations WHILE THE CITY WAS BUILDING THE ARENA FOR THEM. Damn, that's some gangster malfeasance there....
