This year is an outlier. The transfer portal contains both players moving from mid majors to the power conferences and from the power conferences to the mid majors and below. There are a variety of reasons players are moving. The interesting thing about college athletes is that the vast majority of them are interested in playing rather than money. As some posters have pointed out, not every transfer situation is a good fit and there is a risk that the player will not fit. We have examples at Loyola.
Since most players want to play as freshmen, I think we will continue to see good players play at mid majors. The freshman may not get that guarantee of playing time at a bigger school or they may lose their high division one offer on account of a transfer. This means that there will be impactful freshman at smaller schools. Unlike football, one impactful freshman can make a deep run in the tourney - just as a less talented experienced team can make a run.
