Re: Drake Preview and Game Thread -- 1/7/2020
I love a team that can throw in a zone every once in awhile...Dont think we have done it since the Turk/Petersen days...when we would throw out that 1-3-1 every once in a while.....this team may not be quick enough to run a 1-3-1 but they could throw a 2-3 out there and that would let them play two of the big guys and they could run a high post /low post offense with Welch up top and Krut down low......or Krut up top and Frank down low.....I think it would cause some mismatches in the Valley.......

I feel like Porter threw out the 1-3-1 for one or two possessions coming out of a timeout during the Valpo game. But that was the only time I recall seeing it this year.natetheskate wrote:I love a team that can throw in a zone every once in awhile...Dont think we have done it since the Turk/Petersen days...when we would throw out that 1-3-1 every once in a while.....this team may not be quick enough to run a 1-3-1 but they could throw a 2-3 out there and that would let them play two of the big guys and they could run a high post /low post offense with Welch up top and Krut down low......or Krut up top and Frank down low.....I think it would cause some mismatches in the Valley.......

We've run the 1-3-1 several times this year. In fact, we ran it on the last possession of the game against MO St. It's usually once or twice a game and can easily be missed if you don't catch it right away.

2-3 Zone would be interesting. Only hesitation doing it against this specific team is this plays into Drake’s strength of shooting 3s.
I would also like to see more Welch, but matchup pending it seems like Porter as usual is starting to restrict the minutes for certain players as we move into conference play

The nice thing about this year’s team is we have so many options and can dictate some matchups/ride the hot hand. The top end of our guard/forward play isn't the best we've ever had, but it's probably the most level across the board. We have the benefit of being able to mix and match on different matchups and ride the hot hand. Krutwig, Williamson, Hall, Clemons, Pipkins, and Kennedy all have multiple double digit scoring efforts over the last 8 games. If Kennedy is struggling chances are Pipkins is able to pick up the slack. Then beyond the top 8 (Kennedy, Pipkins, and Agunnanne), we have further depth with our other two freshman. Wojcik’s length can cause problems on the defensive end and when he’s assertive on offense he can knock down shots. Welch always has great energy on the bench and plays hard in limited minutes. He definitely needs to add weight as I think MSU would have picked on him this weekend… But give him time and I think he’s a real weapon by his junior year.Dansen wrote:2-3 Zone would be interesting. Crazy to think we add two relatively known quantities in Kaifes and Norris next year, PLUS Hebb.

We might shoot 50% from three next yearBlers wrote:Crazy to think we add two relatively known quantities in Kaifes and Norris next year, PLUS Hebb.
Also, I keep forgetting that we are 1 over the scholarship limit.

It very hard not to look at our depth this year and then not immediately start thinking about what next year is going to look like if everything plays out well for us.

Hall and Uguak have to come up big in this game, because they're the mismatches.
We can't continue to play this speed, though.
