Didn't know about Smythe either. He played in the exhibition game against UW Stout. I guess the rule is exhibition games don't count for redshirt purposes.

Edit: Did a little more research on redshirt rules. According to Sports Illustrated, rule proposed to be relaxed this year to allow player to appear in 4 games without costing him a year's eligibility. Don't know if rule enacted and in effect.
