Just a theory (to go along with your JFK comment) but I wonder if nobody on the staff noticed that they added another second onto the clock? I think the initial time left was .4 seconds or something, and then they bumped it out to 1.7 I think after review. That lob play makes more sense if they think they only had .4 to get a shot off.

It actually ONLY makes sense if that's what they thought, but there's just no way that could be the case... right?

I watched the ref go into our huddle after the review to tell Drew and the staff the clock adjustment. So it seems they were well aware of the clock change to 1.7 which makes the play call even more ridiculous.
