Post subject:  The Future of the NCAA Tournament

There's been a lot of smoke on social media over the past few weeks about March Madness and how the money-hungry P5 schools will look to change it--expansion to include more P5 teams (because 8 or 9 teams from one conference isn't enough!); eliminating auto-bids for small conferences; etc.. This story just dropped that the SEC commissioner (who is one of the most powerful figures in college athletics) wants a "fresh look" at the NCAA basketball tournament: https://www.si.com/college/2022/08/12/s ... -expansion

The tournament is one of the few things in all of sports that is near-perfect. It captivates the country for three weeks. It seems like it's the perfect size. The Cinderella stories become international sensations overnight. And yet, the "big guys" are "open to" changes...without giving sound reasons as to why there should be changes or what should change. They seem to be 'framing' it as "last teams in the tourney sometimes go far so there should be more teams in the tourney". But I think we can see through that...this is really going to be a money-grab to get more P5 schools in and push out the really small conferences from ever having a chance.

Not a surprise it's coming from from the commissioner of the conferences whose prized team got knocked out by a scrappy small-school 15 seed.

Greed and TV money will eventually kill college sports......the days when the University of Chicago took the El to Northwestern to play a game ...are gone.....makes me sad.

LIKE THE PGA, THE NCAA needs some competition. It is a monopoly that pretends to be equitable but in fact is rigged to insure the P5 (piss 5) get all the gravy.
There should be a max on the number of teams from a conference. Until the P5 start playing home and home against mid majors they will continue in their greedy ways. The transfer portal and the NIL crap will insure that wealthy donors corner the market on the star players. There is only so much money and many players are going to be disappointed in how little they will get.
Sports has gotten ridiculous with their salaries.
I am glad to see so many empty seats in the MLB. At least the NFL and NHL players put their bodies on the line and the football players have short careers.
In MLB every hang nail needs a trip to the DL.
