That's exactly the right thing for any school in this situation to do. The first reason is that this be a wasted season if they brought in a new coach because there would be no time for him to implement his culture, scheme, or hire his own assistants. The second and possibly more important reason is that by not hiring anyone right away, they have a huge advantage in the next coaching carousel by having 4.5 months to evaluate potential candidates and do their due diligence. They'll be interviewing coaches while other schools are still rounding up buyout money from their boosters. Plus, in this environment, I suspect that less jobs will open up, making Wichita State's more desirable than it might be in a more normal year.
