THANKS:

Cully did a great job in helping put young LU’s team chemistry together last year, especially in the 4 game Italy exhibition tour, averaging 9 apg (note for the NCAA season the nation’s assist leader had 8.5 apg, followed by a second player with 7.9 apg).

Cully led the team to a 14-4 start (including the 4-1 Italy & exhibition start) culminating in the win over Valparaiso. Unfortunately we then had a 4 game skid (3 of them with a one basket margin) led by good performances by 4 Horizon point guards (Perry, Sykes, Arceneaux, & Talton). Injuries took out LU for the rest of the season, after that with the bench never having more than 2 or 3 scholarship players available until the last game of the season. We went 5-13, after the 14-4 start.

Cully also did a great job in helping developing Jeff “Kiki” White by the end of the year into a premier point guard.

Cully was 5th in Horizon play with 4.0 assists per game, however his 5.6 ap40m was tops in the league, ahead of Cleveland’s Charlie Lee’s 5.4 ap40m.

But he still paled by comparison (as did everyone else in the Horizon) to his teammate Jeff "Kiki" White, who in the 6 games he ended the season at point guard averaged 5.7 assists per game and 7.5 ap40min.

Cully had some great games, scoring 18 points in the 3 point win against Tennessee Tech, & 24 points in the historic win over DePaul. He also dished out 9 assists in both the Western Michigan & Furman games. Although he only averaged 7.8 ppg in conference play, Cully shot well from 3 range (39.5%) and the line (81.5%), although on his drives & short 2 point shots he only shot 29.4%.

SORRY

Sorry about Cully’s recurring injury problems. In 3 of his last 4 seasons playing basketball, he had major injuries that ended his season.

2012-13 With LU he missed LU’s last 6 games & was ineffective in his last 2 games prior to the injury.

2011-12 transfer red-shirt

2010-11 With Iowa he had a season ending injury after playing only the first 5 games.

2009-10 His only healthy Iowa season when he played 32 games.

2008-09 He missed the last 13 of 29 HS senior games with an injury.

At LU, Cully’s weakness was his turnovers. Cully was 1st in Horizon play in turnovers with per 40 minutes played with 4.9. At 1.1 a/to ratio, Cully was tied for 22nd in assist to turnover ratio for Horizon play, which is not good for a point guard.

Jeff “Kiki” White’s 2.7 assist to turnover ratio in last 6 games was again better than any other Horizon player. In those 6 games White averaged 7.6 assists to 2.6 turnovers per 40 minutes played.

It would be nice to have Cully back this year for depth, but with his recurring injury problems in a physically tougher league, we could not count on him finishing the season. Also I don’t know if his pride would let him play second string behind the more talented Jeff “Kiki” White. We do have 2 open scholarships for the year (unless Coach Moser comes up with some more great red-shirts like Milton Doyle or unless the injured Kody Williams returns for his senior year).

GOD BLESS

Cully should get his degree after this summer. He is a leader who helped others & that bodes well for his future career and in turning out to be a good person, which is the most important thing in life.

If he wishes it, I hope he can get a get a graduate degree at a school in a league with less competition or a school in another Division. Another thought is that he might make a good basketball coach.

May God watch over & bless Cully.

I'm happy to hear that he is getting his degree from Loyola.
