We have hired Steve Shields as an assistant coach he has been a coach at Arkansas Little Rock for the past 12 years including while Porter was there. Here is the article about the hiring.

What was left unsaid in the press release was that in order to make room for Shields, Matt Gordon was demoted from assistant coach back to his former position of director of basketball operations.

Under NCAA rules, a team is allowed only three assistant coaches.

Also left unsaid was that Shields was fired by Arkansas Little Rock after the 2014-2015 season.

Loyola's SID is not exactly forthright when it comes to telling the WHOLE story, leaving it up to Swella to fill in the details.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not being negative about the hire, just about the way it was announced.

From my brief online research, he seems like a good guy and a good coach.

Yeah, I noticed that as well.

Does Matt have to take a decrease in salary? Is it just a title switch to accommodate this?

Matt has been a loyal assistant and seems very capable. I hope it is just a realignment of titles to accommodate the hire.

Also on the women's side, I see that Cheryl has a new assistant as well. One who has a lot of experience.

I wonder if we can read into this that Porter has grown to value an experienced assistant like he had in Robinson for the last two years. I personally feel like Robinson contributed a lot to the team and coaching staff, particularly on the court. If the assistant coaching staff was Dildy, Gordon, and Mullins, that's not a lot of experience, especially since it seems like Dildy, the longest tenured of the three, is mainly a recruiter and less of an in-game coach.

I'm glad to see Porter hire an experienced coach that he trusts, even though I'm sorry to see Gordon's role change. I'm hoping it's something that he wanted.
