Niko Medved - Drake's old coach, just took the Minnesota job.

I am concerned about the Big East and Big Ten jobs. Indiana, Iowa and Minnesota concerned me. They are filled, which is good news. The Villanova and Xavier jobs are more attractive, but I think those schools will go to retreads rather than young coach.

I am less concerned about the Big 12, the other A10 jobs or Mountain West jobs. I think he is building a good resume, he makes comparable money to the Mountain West and a10 job. He is safe at LUC for the foreseeable future. I don't think Coach Valentine will leave for a similar job. I think Drake is a lateral step at best.

I agree. Villanova and Xavier would have a tough time selling their donors on a Coach Drew hire. He is finishing up his fourth season. Has one tourney appearance (with Porter's recruits and an ugly loss), one awful season and two NIT appearances. I think Villanova and Xavier (and other power conference jobs) will get someone with a better resume.

Do feel bad for Drake though. Took a chance on a D2 coach, had an awesome season and now he's gone. And that's after losing Medved and Devries. Will be interesting to see if they can make another successful hire and sustain their dominance over the MVC.

Do you think the transfer rules make it easier or harder to evaluate coaches? Is McCollum really as good as this year suggests or did his guys just way outperform expectations making the jump from D2 to the MVC? Seems unlikely they can pull a rabbit out of the hat again jumping to the Big 10. Obviously they're his guys and he coached them to that success but high major basketball seems like a whole different animal right now it terms of assembling a team and getting them to gel and commit to a system.

I think it's crazy that a P5 school (granted - not a particularly good one) would hire McCollum after 1 successful season. While he is a good story and very likable and an Iowa native, I am guessing most of the Hawkeye fan base was expecting someone with a better D1 resume.

For that matter, I am still a little shocked that DaVries was considered the top coach available for a P5 opening and that Indiana was so thrilled to get him. He is good - no question. But is he really the best candidate out there for a Big 10 school with Indiana's tradition and deep pockets? Maybe. But it Just feels like there should be somebody better out there.

What it does tell us is that the pool of level 2 candidates that are considered ready for the big money/big school jobs is very shallow. And it tells us that we should be nervous about Drew. He is still very young and has yet to get his own team to the NCAA, but given the hires we have seen so far......he has got to be pretty high on the industry's list. I think we should all be a little nervous.

Iowa officially hires Drake’s head coach, which is a smart move IMO

Now that leaves Drake open. I wouldn’t be shocked to see them look at former Rambler and current Iowa State assistant JR Blount. I have no idea if they actually will, but he’s been on his way up the coaching charts. Former Loyola assistant and current Marquette assistant…and Drake alum…CJ Rivers is also making a name for himself, but he might still be too young for his first head job at that level.

Yes ^^

For Drake opening I'm also seeing Ali Farokhmanesh in conversation if the CSU promotion falls through. He'd work the Valley nicely. Betting on Drake going the D2 route again. So much talent flowing thru there. Farokhmanesh agreed to CSU in the interim about a half hour ago, yet they're proceeding on a national search anyways....

Xavier - I predict Luke Murray. Was on staff there during Chris Mack days and then followed Mack to Louisville. But then also reading they could be targeting Mack to come back and leave Charleston after a year with them. Sean Miller leaving is very unfortunate but they probably were mindful of it happening - just not ready for it. The timing of it after last week is a bad look.

Coach Porter - After this weekend's comments on the NIL and other stuff you know he wants out from OU. Does he stay or go elsewhere?

Richard Pitino - Nova? VCU? Xavier?

Most intrigued with what VCU does....

I think St. Louis is a pretty good example. Sherz left Indiana State to move into the A10 and he brought some D1 players from MVC to A10. I am not sure if they performed as well in A10 as they did in MVC. McCollum jumped up and brought his players from D2 in MVC. Drake did upset Mizzo, but Texas Tech handled them relatively easily. Will his guys from D2 perform next year in a P5 conference? We will see. He certainly can coach a little bit, but he is gonna learn, like Porter, coaching only gets you so far without top talent.

Devries maybe a good fit for Indiana because of the conference they play in, the Big 10. The big 10 is a rugged league and if you don’t coach defense and toughness you can’t win there. His teams have always been well coached and tough. He might do well there.`
