For what it is worth,,,I think Drew recruits so that he can have a defensive line up that can guard 1-5. I think it is why we dont have a big physical post player on the roster....the advantage is we dont get stuck in bad pick and rolls which can also lead to mis matches.....I do remember that Coach Moser combined the two...there was a defensive plan for each game that required some switches and some stick with your guy no matter what scenarios...all depending on how he thought different match up would work.....
Thank god they have gotten rid of that high double team they used to run way up high..
As for detail I remember walking into a conference room at the team hotel at Arch Madness where the team had done their pre-game and their were little paper foot prints everywhere...where they had gone through how they were going to switch or double team etc...looked like an Arthur Murry dance studio.
I do not think we are nearly as good defensively since Coach Moser left....Coach Valentine seems to rely more on our pure athleticism .

True but those teams also had elite level defenders in Richardson, Williamson, Hall, Uguak.. probably more.

other than Uguak particularly Richardson and Hall were average athletes who learned to play great defense by being part of a very good defensive system and Williamson was just a beast in effort but with in a system and part of that system was putting these guys in good spots to succeed defensively. as people have pointed out with a switch everywhere system you end up having some real mismatches.
